hey guys, iam back again i dont want to tap on my last season thread so i will start a new one.
merc 1998 5.OL mercarb, boat ran great at the start of last season then it develope a backfire .
i had rebuilt the carb i thought that was the problem, but deep down in my bones i knew something was wrong. few night ago out fishing i heard that deep down backfire and each time the boat hesitate .
what i did notice from that day it first started that there was steam behind the boat from the exhaust that was not there before. few night ago the same steam, mark both riser/manifolds was spanking new last season, but where the riser meets the manifolds got rusty rusty that a sighn of water maybe a gasket leak?? answer is yes tonight i take off one spark plug wire at a time with the engine running one wire did not make a diffrent i trace that wire to one of the cilinder right at the exhaust riser, surprise that plug was a mess.. that when i took of the riser and found water in the manifold portside.
tommorro i will take the next side off and re install them with real quicksilver gasket the gasket i use last was those green color paper like gasket must have been the cheap type.

now what should i do should i pour marvel mystry oil in the cilinder and let it sits for a while then crank it over and install new plugs??? i hope that the ongly cilinder with a problem.
what surprise me the boat was still running strong. your thought guys.

update , this is what i did today , check the other plugs to see if water had got to them, so far nothing.
i replace the bad plug , install a set of quicksilver riser gaskets take it for a quick test run at 4200 rpm no more backfiring boat runs great. before i leave the yard i re fog the engine again with marble mystry oil . hopefully that it now time to get the drive yoke seal fix. thanks guys
