Post Subject: 1986 Merccruiser alpha one 140 Posted: 04:32:18 Today
Just bought this 4 cyl sterndrive on an 86 16' Blue Water. Owner said it ran cold blooded and had to run 10 min. before using. Took it out yesterday and it powered up fine. Increased power and it ran for about two minutes and then lost power, sputtered and died. Tried to restart but it would sputter then die. Now it won't start at all. He had put Sta-Bil in the gas for winter storage. Is it a carb or fuel pump or bad gas situation?
Thank you.

Blazed, You might like to post this in the I/O forum. I would start with the basics. Do you have spark? if not check the shift assist switch on the shift cable at the motor. it should be centered in the cradle. If you have spark, look at a plug or two for rich or fouled condition. Check the choke to see if it is open or stuck closed. You can try some starting fluid if you want. Watch out for fire, however. See if the carb squits gas when the throttle is pumped. If not check fuel filters and antisiphon valve for clogged condition.
