i am trying to replace the harness on my mercontrol unit and the solder won't melt. it's as if the wires are welded to the switch.(i realize they are not). has anybody else experienced this? i am using a butane soldering iron that has worked on anything else i've ever tried.

It'll get a coat of oxide on it that's a pretty good insulator. Try fluxing it and adding a drop of new high qualtiy (60-40, or eutectic) solder. Use an activated resin flux.

May b conductive epoxy. Looks like soder but is an adheasive. leave short leads and shrink wrap. Yes they do sell new switches.

Are you trying to remove the old wires or solder new wires onto the switch?

Can you post a pic?

Care with how much heat you use, you may be buying a new switch.
