Hi, Total novice here. Im' about halfway through my first ever boat project started with a shell from 1970. Now fitting original Mercury 200 Blueband 20HP with Mercontrol. Question> should I have throttle control when in reverse, or does my Mercontrol need setting up as it doesn't at the moment? Video here httpwwwfreewebscomextraauctionsales://..//

cool boat, don't like the bunk set up, need to be much beefier. hope you are not planning on powering it with a 20hp engine. you should have throttle in reverse, to about 1/2 rpms

Not sure which way I'm going with it yet, any suggestions always noted.
When I pull back the control through neutral at idle it slips into reverse fine but it wont pass idle. I didnt know if that was the norm or if I should be able to put at least some power on?
In Fwd the throttle is progressive as expected.
Limited to 4kts here on the Thames!!!

what no water skiing on the Thames? you should a have about 1/2 throttle in reverse, inorder to battle current or wind, if 4 kts in the limit i understand only the 20 hp. in Florida USA i would put 100hp on it.
just noticed your autos steering is on right, boats on left, USA auto on left, boat on right. are we really that rebelious?

Re: Mercontrol throttle for reverse?

Thanks for comments...inspiring.
Yea, the helm confused me too, after a lifetime of driving on the left, (the right way of course!) then living in Germany for a few years doing the opposit now back in the UK boating on the right and driving on the left. No wonder we are in a state.

Thanks for the info about the throttle, I will have a look at the cams etc in the box later on today, (at last 28 degC).

Lakes and sea only for sking, most inland rivers have orders to protect banks but I will take it somewhere eventually for a bit of fun.

Okay... I took the throttle box apart, two halves. Inside thare are two cam like devices each attached to the cables, between them is the large circular "cam disk"? with TDC embosed on the edge, it has a sort of semi-circular slot that the cam buttons ride in. At one end of the slot is a bolted in brass plate that appears to be by design to limit travel one way.
Is that where my problem may be?
Thanks

Actually, the brass plate is more like an insert in the same shape as the cam channel.

It is all there, three cams. Make sure you get it all put together correctly. It can be tricky.. Put it together in the neutral position and make sure all three cams are lined up properly.

Ah! (Doh!) now realise that original config was cable reversed. Control box came from a different boat, probably mounted on other side.
Everything works well now. I'll leave photos on site for others to reference.
