OK guys Ive been running the boat now for a couple weeks with some minor problems, i did the transom, stringers and floor earlier this summer so these last few weeks have been enjoyment, anyways i have a 79 tempest with a mercruiser 120 I/O my throttle was messed when i bought the boat so a couple weeks ago a friend gave me a tracker throttle with cables, i installed it after figuring out how to reverse the throttle direction (WHAT A PITA) and i played around with gear adjustment for days and days it seems i can get reverse, but no drive then a little more i get drive but no reverse This was checked by hand (check and see if the prop will spin or if its grabbed the gear) now out on the water i get drive with a 1sec slip (i hear a slight grind then shes in drive and off we go) now reverse i stop the boat place in reverse and grinnddddddddddddddd give a little throttle and bang into reverse at 1500rpm no is there a way to adjust this so i can get reverse and drive with no grind?? i need help to figure this out please!!!! and thank you.:)

Re: Mercruise Shift Cable adjustment

sounds like a lower shift cable problem. they do go bad and there is no repair short of replacement.
while i'm not the pro. i'd start there. seperate the lower cable from the shift plate and operate by hand and see if it performs proper. it should move very freely. assuming it does. set it up by the book. 6'' c to c of the barrels i believe while in fwd. assuming it still don't perform since ya R&Red the remote controls. i'd get the book once again and follow those proceedures to the tee. there's about 14 steps (+ or -). follow these steps one by one to the tee to set it up i would think.
this might be a good read for ya..
