Hi everyone

I will start for the first time with my little boat this spring - haven't had a boat before.

I got this inboard Mercruiser which I was told previously must be a stunning engine. The Z-drive can be tilt up - is this done after any ride or just for towing? The boat is run in freshwater.

Thanks for your information.

that is a good answer to be honest. In English this thing mus be called differently. It is just the propeller unit that comes out of the boat. It is the opposite of an outboard. Looks like a little tail and certainly has a nice name in English - which I will be learning in a moment ;-) Any average sized boat has it. I think almost any Mercruiser engines are powered that way.

Might be called outdrive.

Ayuh,.... Got ya now,... Yes, the Outdrive...

The outdrive is usually trimmed down to the lowest point to take off,...
After reaching an on plane attitude, it's trimmed up, til the speed picks up....
That's known as neutral trim...
Trim it too high,+ the boat will porpoise, or bounce up,+ down...
trim to low,+ the hull will plow water, wasting fuel...

When pulled out of the water, tilting it Full Up, gives more clearance, so you don't wack the prop on the ground...
Never, Ever run the motor with the outdrive in the Full Up position...
It'll tear up the u-joints...

yep, it's called a stern drive.

you can use the trim function any time. your even supposed to use it while underway.
there is trim and trailer function usually. trailer function raises the drive from full down to full up for launching, retrieving, and trailering in the full up position. trim function operates from full down to 20* up (maybe, not sure of the range) this is designed to operate this way so the ujoints don't get to bent while operating at any rpm range. when your ready to get up to plane, you start with trim all the way in (down) after you reach plane, you trim up for best engine speed at whatever speed over ground your wanting to operate at. you'll hear the engine rpms come up as the boat becomes more effecient for whatever speed your going. you can over trim up which usually causes ventilation. where the prop is sucking air. the rpms increase rapidly. this is not desirable.
on the older mercruiser 1 drives, like i'll assume you have, the trim limit switch breaks because of poor design i guess. when this occurs, trailer function usually still works. you can trim with that, but keep in mind not to trim to high. ujoints don't like to operate at severe angles..
trim and trailer function can be operated at any rpm. but don't be into trailer function at high rpms. idle only while trimmed into the trailer range.

go to the adults only sticky at the top of the i/o forum page. look at item #9 for the mercruiser service manual that applies to your rig. download it and read away. lots of info in these books that is must have info if your gonna work on your boat.

thanks a lot, bond.

I think I was writing to fast - the question was related to the parking position. (Sorry, but thanks for the information on the trim anyway, this is something I will have to level out.
