So What would happen if I was to run this combo, if the the gear ratio is 1.98:1?.

Ayuh,...

You run a pretty good chance of Over-reving the motor,+ probably won't have good top-end speeds...
Unless on the outside chance you can find a prop Big enough to make up the difference....

Bondo is correct.

That engine DOES NOT like to rev. 4300 RPM is just about max. for it. Any more than that and it will complain-loudly.

So here is another thought. Correct me if I am wrong. I was looking at the Seloc book and it say there is a 140 that has 6 cylinders. Is there a way to tell which engine I have for sure. The sticker on the valve cover has been painted over and is unreadable. I definately know it is a GM motor. I am just wondering why some one would change everything out. Is the gimble the same for 165 and 120/140?

Well, yes, there was, but only in 1963.

Hint: Stay out of the Seloc books when looking for facts, specs and important things. There are OEM manuals available for download. Do a search, they are easy to find.

I have 2 seloc garbage manuals, and the info in them are sometimes opposite of what the real info should be.

Sometimes not even mentioned, like performing a task. Or a task has to be performed before doing the task you want to perform.

Can anyone tell me what the engine horse power is by the SN? I had a guy tell me that it is a 292cid not the 250cid that I thought it was. Th SN is 3079887. This is on a stickr that is on the strbrd side of the valve cover- says mercruiser-Kiekhapher. Onthe strbrd side above the starter is another plate with model # 99021851 and SN W419716 and it say OMC Sterndrive

Seen merc motors and stringer drives before, and have one myself.

The outdrive that is currently on this motor is a merc 120/140hp. I believe the outdrive has been changed at some point and I have not gotten to checking the gear ratio. Just trying to figure out what the engine is for sure for rebuilding. Probably need to try and buy the correct gear for the outdrive.

I just replaced a 120HP (which blew up 'cause the guy before me though you installed freeze plugs with silicon instead of pressing into the block, yeah, I didn't look) with a 165HP. I knew there were going to be gear ratio issues, but figured if I kept the revs down I would be OK for now.

I have also been trying to once and for all ID the outdrive which has a label on the gimbal housing that says 120 in big letters, S/N 6121313. I have previously ID'd it as a model 1 (non-alpha), but was never sure.

Its important now because I need a water pump kit for the lower end, and I need to change out the gears for the proper ratio. I just want to make damn sure I get the right parts.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Ouch, I bought the Seloc manual off IBoats.com.
I took this advice and searched for OEM manuals, but all I seem to come up with is Seloc or Clymer, and I really hate Clymer.

Any suggestions?
