Re: mercruiser 165 runs

Gettng better and better. Got marine alternator installed and it charges great. now that it is wired properly it even shuts off like it is supposed to. put on a new belt. also installed a temperature sending unit and the guage works now. the bow lights work. now for the drive maintenance. the mechanic can't work on it tomorrow, so I may look at the manual and try to remove it myself and get started. It's going to be a pretty day here in Tuscaloosa, 65 and sunny. wish I could take it for a ride. will probable put the sailboat in the water since there will be a little wind.

ya, do that. you be happy ya did. it's not to hard either.....put in helm in fwd. remove trim rams at aft pin. 6 nuts and pull drive off.

hint. make yerself a homemade drive stand (item #19... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=288430 ). the stand is most helpful with removal + installation.

Got drive off. Now for gimbal bearing removal (it's noisey). How do you grease them, didn't see any fitting?
Lots of oil in the ujoint bellows. How hard is it to change the upper gear seal? Looks like the whole gear comes out and probable needs to be reset like a car ring and pinion?

Lube fitting has a tube to the outside on right hand side of plate.

most are greased through a grease zerk on the starboard side of the gimble housing.

however sometimes there is no prevision for greaseing. as in no zerk. these, the gimble brg. must be removed and hand greased with a tool similar to this.
http://www.mercstuff.com/greasepackingtool.htm

or the very newest of oem replacement gimble brgs. are perma lub. they don't require greasing.

gear lub leak into the bellows i assume?
for sure use your s/m when ya go get this seal. follow it close.
basically, you pull the drive. remove the brg. retainer nut of the nose of the drive. where the driven gear yoke disappears into the drive. this pulls out as an assembly. remove one nut and ya pull the driven gear, double brg., and finally get to the seal.

the driven gear and double brg. set.

the whole assy. the seal is the second to last on the right in the pic. second to last item to be removed off the assy. also.
if no gears or brgs. are replaced. you can put it all back together again with a new nut and washer. 75 ft. lbs on the new nut. assuming you have the small spacer in the pic. if no spacer a different method is used to preload the brg. set. further reading in the s/m will be required.

if the seal is bad, likely so is the yoke. it'll have a seal groove in it like this.

this is cause to replace the yoke also...

Re: mercruiser 165 runs

my driveshaft is rusty and badly pitted. i can see this after cleaning off all the gear oil. i am afraid it would come apart if put back in. so i will look for some used parts. tempted to put it back in, grease the gimbal bearing and ujoints, fill the gearbos with oil and run it, but will try to slow down and do it right. went sailing yesterday afternoon in my GulfCoast 18. drunk college students in a ski boat hollared they liked my boat and called it a "kick ***" boat. i think that was a compliment.
i am making progress and learning alot. thanks to all in this group!

37 at the ujoint, the one that goes into the engine coupler. looks like i may get an alignment tool out of this. 34 is the short one that you showed with a wear groove from the seal. that is pitted too and i haven't pulled it out yet to see if it has a groove. haven't looked at the manual, it's a digital one and slow to find the right page. How does that come out? looked on ebay and several pre alpha 165 uppers for sale under $200, should be able to get one locally for less than that with good ujoints and seal.

bummer, #37 is nla. guess used is where that's at. makes a used drive w/ u joints and shafts look more desirable.

pp 6A22 if yer using s/m #1.
How does that come out?
ya gotta take the retainer nut off. then the driven gear and yoke and brgs all pull out as an assy.

good deal on getting a alignment bar. i procrastinated about getting one when i should have just gotten one right away. if yer working on your drive. it's a must have tool imho.

I got a used upper for $200 and tried it out today. It worked good and we had a nice winter ride in 70 degrees on Lake Tuscaloosa.

Awesome, Aristocruise!
We're getting serious withdrawal symptoms here. I want to get out in a boat, but I'll have to settle for a ski lift!

Re: mercruiser 165 runs

It seemed less expensive to get the good used than rebuild mine.
Update, went about 30 miles up and back the length of Lake Tuscaloosa yesterday. Kinda chilly but a great test run. Still have more to do, never done, but making progress.
