Mercruiser 170hp 470 3.7 impeller issue

Flushed cooling system. Pulled outdrive off and the impeller and the plastic tube were melted and missing fins. Dont know how that happened i changed it all this year when i bought the boat.

any idea what would cause that to melt ?

Iam replacing now: New impeller and housing and water pocket seal, exhaust boot on inside and water flap were all melted and burned.

It actually melted some of the fins to the top of the metal ring inside the housing.

what would cause the water flap to melt ?

hmmm..let's see..... how about lack of water? (and lots of friction)....Friction, combined with waterless exhaust temps in that area.
