I just bought this boat about 3 weeks ago. I have been doing alot of little things here and there on it and been trying to get it to be a nice boat. Well my problem with it is that it will run forever in my driveway with the muffs on it. When I get it on the lake it will run for about half an hour then die. It wont start for a bit, but when it does I try to throw it in gear and go but it dies. Sometimes it will go in gear and go after sitting in the water dead for like an hour. I have replace the fuel pump on it, and the guy I bought it from said he rebuilt the carb, but it might need to be done again. Last night there was gas coming out of the vent tube, it has never done that either. Anybody have any input on this?

Timing maybe??? If set on land without a gun on the lake with resistance could make run different

Yea the gas was coming out of the tank vent tube. Would it still run out of water if the vent tube is clogged with gas or other stuff.

have you checked for voltage at the coil and for a sprk when it won't start?

coil could be overheating..

fuel issue - did you go standard replacement pump or electric?

how much fuel is in the tank?

I have not checked the coil yet, but I will. It has a standard pump on it now. It had an electric pump on there, but I replaced it with the OEM pump. The tank is around 3/4 full now, it was at full. It might be a little lower in fuel now because it leaked out. There are several things I still need to try, but I wanted to get a little list of all the things I could try before I get a carb rebuild kit.

Re: Mercruiser 170Hp wont stay running

So a little update. Went out this weekend and tried it again. I did a couple of five minute laps with no problem. We hooked up a tube to it and rode around for like half an hour or so. The guy on the tube got tired so we went to swith people out and as soon as I put it in gear it died and would not start. It turned over one time and quit. It did the same thing last weekend and I thought maybe both batteries were dead. I came home and put them on the charger and they were at 100% charge. I have a new coil that im gonna throw on this week. I also cleaned out the vent tube, but didnt help any. Any other thoughts?

Need to determine if is a fuel or ignition problem. Right after it stalls, pump the throttle an see if there is fuel squirting in the carb. If there is, chances are that its an ignition issue. Right after it stalls, see if you have voltage at the + terminal on the coil. Go from there. HTH
