I am new at the boating scene and have run into a problem. I bought a 1983 century 5000 sun express 23' with a mercruiser 228 engine I/O and a mercruiser lower unit (don't know what model) and the transom needs repaired. I want to do this myself but am at a loss at where to start. I got in the engine compartment today and cant tell if I need to take the gimble and lower unit out first or the engine. I can get to 2 of the gimble nuts but not to the bottom ones. I have a repair manual coming in the mail but I am not very patient so if any one has some tricks or advice please help. thaks in advance,

So to start I remove the outdrive from the gimble on the outside, leaving the gimble assy installed until after engine removal correct?

Yes, you have to remove the drive first.
BUT, you have to do it properly so you don't bend things. Put the shifter in forward so the upper and lower shift shoes are straight forward. Then remove the bolts and pull the drive.
Hopefully, you get the manual soon so you know the proper names for things you want to remove.

The manual is the best tool in your toolbox. Check this sight for some basic ideas. www.mercstuff.com

Re: mercruiser 228 and lower unit removal help needed

I am replacing the starter on a 1984 mercruiser I/O 228, due to rain water that got in boat while I was gone on vacation. I drained the oil because there is water in it. Do I need to also remove the oil filter and lower unit and drain as well? Is that going to be very difficuilt? I do not have a service manual yet, should I get that first before attempting to remove the lower unit? Is this necessary or is there a easier way. I am worried there may still be water in the rear especially around flywheel that may damage my new starter. On the lower unit I see only about 4 bolts. Any advise would be great

Welcome to iboats.
Best advise I can give is for you to start a new thread so people can see your post, instead of hiding it at the end of a 5 year old post of someone elses.
