Hello All,

Would it be possible for someone to tell me where I can purchase or obtain an electrical schematic for a 1980 mercruiser 228 that has a standard ignition and not the electronic ignition?

I have an older, very detailed shop manual but it only shows a schematic for a 228 with electronic ignition. I have tried to compare several other models engines with a standard ignition and they all are similar but every one seems to have something different with the way my boat was previously setup.

There are numerous wires which are broken and I feel it best to go thru the entire wiring harness since I have to replace the Alt, starter and the automotive HEI distributor that was previously installed

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated

You will need to get a marine distributer.....:)

#3 (in ziggies list) is the one you need for the engine #4 is the one you need for your drive and trim systems.

He probably has a marine distributor. The 228's from 79 to 82 had a Mallory points type distributor.

Good morning, Don........:D
He said he has an HEI auto distributor, I just assumed it had been changed from OEM for some reason & wanted to point out he needed to go back to marine......
I really don't know what he's got in there.....:)

 missed the whole third sentence in his original post. Think I will go back to bed and start over. Spilled my first cup of coffee all over the kitchen floor when the handle of the cup fell off the cup!

Re: Mercruiser 228 wiring help

Hello,

I want to thank everyone for the quick responses and help. I?m in the process of downloading manual #3 from the link Ziggy provided. It looks like this manual may go into more detail for each engine since it only covers 6 years. My current manual is a Seloc repair manual which covers from 1964-1992.

Yes, I am replacing the auto starter, distributor and alternator with the original equipment after reading how dangerous those can be.

Hopefully I can get this boat back to its original condition by October to catch the Tuna running south for the winter.

My wife also thanks you. I told her I was getting a new boat if I couldn?t fix this one. As you can imagine that didn?t go over too well.

Ok, I?m off to go work on the beast.

Thanks again for link and the help.

BHenry
