1992 Mercruiser 3.0 with electronic ignition..

The other day I changed the manifold and elbow, along with a new valve cover gasket. I put the boat on muffs afterward and the boat started right up and idled perfect.

I took it out on the Columbia river today and had nothing but problems. First off every time I would go from forward to neutral or reverse to neutral the boat would die. I thought maybe the shift interrupter switch was still unplugged, but it was ok.

Then the boat would not start....got a real strong smell of gas vapors and it seemed all I was doing was flooding the carb. I figured out later on the only way I could get it to start was to let it sit for about 20 minutes, open the throttle all the way and then pump the gas a bunch of times. It would struggle to fire up, but once it did it would idle fine....that is until I had to shift to neutral and it would die...then I had to repeat steps above. It also lacks the power I had before once I could get it to run.

I'm guessing maybe the bummpy two hour drive to the river might have loosened crap up that was in the carb, or I tarded out and did something wrong with my above repairs. It just seems like the carb is just flooding the engine. I pulled a spark plug on the water and it was just soaked with gas.

Did you check to see if the choke was working? If it was closed, and wouldn't open, it will flood out.
Could also be the fuel pump. Any gas in the clear hose going to the carb from the fuel pump.

I think you are looking at it backwards. If the switch was unhooked, it would not be what caused the engine to die. But, if it was hooked up and your shift cable is binding and the shift interrup system is being activated, then that will be the problem.
But an engine about to die because it's flooding will die when put under a load, so need to fix that problem first.

I took a video of the problem I'm having with the interrupt switch. As you can see, the plastic piece is not moving....

Ayuh,.... Sitting on the trailer,... It Ain't supposed to do anything...
It Only works with a Load on the prop...
