I just recently had a problem come up with my charging system. The last time out, the alternator quit charging the battery. I was on the other side of the lake when it died on me, of course, but I was able to get my hands on a jump box and make it back home. I did some quick checks with a volt meter, and I am only getting 11.8-12.0 volts at the battery with the engine running. I am also getting the same voltage at the main post (large orange wire) on the back of the alternator (Mando AR-150BA 12V/55amp). Is there any way to tell if the alternator itself is bad, or if it is the voltage regulator on the back of the alternator? It looks like $30 vs $100 depending on the problem. Is there any chance the problem could be with the battery or something else in the system?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 Charging problem

Best thing to do is take the altenator to your local starter/alternator repair shop and have them test it.
There are tests in the manual, if you go up to the adults only sticky at the top of the forum, you can download a manual for what ever year engine you have. There is a whole section in the manuals on the alternator and charging system.

Don S. advice is as solid as it comes.
An alt/starter shop will fix it up nice.
