Serial number is in my signature section.
Fresh rebuild I want to get this correct.
Got it running out of the boat on a skid.
I’m trying to set the timing. And it will not go into base timing. I followed the directions first pic.
The motor block is 1978. It has been upgrade to ac Delco est ignition
Second pic is this the correct ignition module.
Third is the video of the first run of the engine with out timing set

Here are the install and timing instructions you need to apply 12 v to the timing shunt (initial timing connector in instructions)to get it in base mode. Didn't look like you were doing it in the instructions you sent.

Without putting it in base mode you can't set the timing. Have seen a few people have trouble where their module is fubar and wont go into base mode. you could just set it to 24 degrees total advance at 4 k rpm as called for in the instructions.

Here is a video that may help

I did exactly what was said in the instructions I just took a pic of the second page of it. I plugged the 2 white wires at the distributor thenDisconnect the shift interruptor switch and plugged the wires that went to the switch together. Then set the timing. Then connected everything back the way it was and the timing didn’t advance to 12 btdc. So that is why I’m asking if the ignition Modual is the correct one.

I also have an advance timing light. And tried just to set the advance timing to 12degrees btdc at 650 rpm with out putting into base mode and the ide jumped up high locked down the distributor. then I turned the idle screw back down to 650, 700 rpm. And then the timing went to 0 almost 2 degrees atdc. Im not understanding what is going on and it’s driving me crazy. Please help.

neutral is fine, just dont run it very long at that rpm if on muffs/hose Helpful to know what you actually did vs what you posted in first post. If u are sure you are applying 12 v to set it in base mode module can be the only issue. If it is still advancing ok set total advance and if it works id leave it alone. Otherwise try replacing module.

There was a recent thread on this that showed there was some variation in total timing specd by mercruiser for various 3.0 s … https://forums.iboats.com/threads/m...o-delco-est-results-in-low-rpm-at-wot.754588/

bottom line you may need to play with where you set the total vs what delco gives or find out what your engines original curve was and set the total to equal that.

I did exactly what the paper work said. That didn’t work
So I tried to set it not in base mode. Started out at 650 rpm. Rotated the distributor to 12btdc. While doing that the idle raised.
So I turned the idle down and the checked the timing again and it went to 2 atdc.

The ignition modual is new last year. Because the old one didn’t go into base mode either. I’m just wondering is this the correct one. There are numbers on it to see what model it is. If anyone can locate the correct one I would appreciate or if this is the correct one. It’s not working right.
