MerCruiser 3.0 starter question

I have a friend with a 2001 3.0 MerCruiser serial number M038073.

The starter solenoid clicks but the starter will not engage; however, if he directly jumps the starter wiring, the starter will engage and turn the engine over.

I assume this is probably an overall starter issue and replacing the starter will take care of it?

if the primary on the starter solenoid is having 12 volts applied and the starter turns then the starter and solenoid are fine. if bypassing the starter solenoid without testing it tells you the motor is good, but nothing about the solenoid

you can test the slave solenoid by checking for voltage at the starter solenoid primary with a voltmeter

So you hit the ignition switch so you can go home and either nothing happens, or you hear a click from the engine, but the starter doesn't crank......... Now what ? If you have a test light, you can find out in only a few minutes what the problem is. I like test lights because they are faster...
