Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

I'm trying to find the part number for item #21 from the previous page. I got the shutter, but I can't seem to find the part number for the gasket between my exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe.
Part number for item 21 is 99777 all the other numbers after it are the same part just produced in different years

The bellow wasn't full of oil. Felt/looked like some grease. Maybe I should order a rebuild kit for this thing? I'm scared to ask what all that entails...
still have a greaseable gimbal bearing the grease ends up in bellows when you grease it.

If there was little to no lube in drive its going some where.

I would start by pressure testing the drive to see where it is leaking. if you are experienced mechanically inclined get the factory manual and buy the specialized tools you can do it with some patience.

Did you check the lube level before first float after you purchased this boat? Could be that the previous owner drained it but never refilled it.

I'm not afraid to try...but some mistakes are pretty costly lessons that I'm trying to avoid. I really appreciate all you guys being willing to take the time to talk to us newbies and help us avoid some of the major land mines.

I can't say I'm experienced with these and I certainly don't claim to be an expert in any kind of combustion engines (that's my dad's area). I work as an electrical controls engineer. I have done a lot of mechanical work from farm to industry - even changed a few transmissions and motors in cars - but I am certainly new to I/O. So, while I understand mechanical processes and principals, I still have plenty to learn.

Is there a good link to see the process for doing the pressure test and what specialty tools might be needed?

It could be this simple. Thanks for pointing that out. I made several mistakes with this when I bought it. At least three of them involved not checking fluids...

I found the link on pressure testing outdrives. I'll look into it more when I get home.

What I can't seem to find is something that should be incredibly simple, but google is really full of bad answers and I'd rather asked the experts (even at the risk of showing my ignorance). What grease(s) should I be using in which areas (google seems to indicate several different types of grease for the outdrive). Also, what oils should I be using for upper, lower and engine oil? I know...I should probably have already had answers to those questions before pulling a motor to replace a motor coupler...but here I am...

To mention what @Bondo says any grease is better than no grease

If you have a greaseable gimbal bearing you will have 2 things. The first is a grease fitting on starboard side of the transom assebly, on the outside. Next if you pump grease in it, the grease will go in and not come back out around the fitting

You should use Merc lube 80W90 or 90W high performance lube

Parts started coming in. New coupler is a little different that the one I took out. Modification to the original design? All pictures of associated part number i find online are like my new one.

Also, trying to find torque specs and having no luck with that either. One place says 35. Looks like there was an argument on here 20 years ago about torque specs and bolt coatings. My old bolts definitely had red locktite on them...but was that factory??

Also, threads don't feel great on the thre holes bolts came out of. Would it be ok to use the other three bolt holes or would that cause balance issues. Obviously I could chase the threads with a tap. Just seeing brand new, virgin threads seems like a good option to avoid other thread related issues. Thoughts??

Tried to check out the link for pressure testing outdrives and for impeller install in the miscellaneous mercruiser info page and links take you to unrelated posts. Anyway someone could update those to point the right place I would greatly appreciate it. I know you guys get tired of us asking the same questions over and again and I'm trying to go find the answers in old posts as I remember that.
