mercruiser 3.7L STARTER KEEP TURNING

hi guys i am trying helping a friend he has a 3.7L 4cilinder engine, he just change the starter with a new one or rebuilt, when try to start the boat the sterter stuck in the cranking mode iven with the keys off , he have to turn the battery switch off to kill the engine, any tip thanks

Wires hooked up wrong.

Key switch messed up.

yea, that what i was telling them , read this if they jump start it by the solenoid whit the key switch on or off it still just stuck in the cranking position, and keep cranking awayyyyy have to kill it with the batt switch. oh well thanks

he had to of wired it incorrectly, look in the manual for the proper diagam. merc used a slave soilnoid in addition to the solionid on the starter, which makes it more confusing.

Assuming the starter has a solenoid mounted on it (You called it a 3.7, not a 470) make sure that the cable connector on terminal A is not touching terminal D of the solenoid. Have seen this happen many times.

thanks everyone for the fast comback, prolem is solved. his boat has twin 470 , the starter relay/solenoid is mounted seperate on the block, he took the solenoid from the working engine and put it on the non working, and is fire right up. now when he finish install a new relay , start taking the boat for a spin, put the drive in gear, but the boat did not move, he said he smell rubber burning, so i told him he can kiss the coupler goodbye.

get a good look at the starter and wiring now that the engine will have to come out :)
