mercruiser 4.3 2bbl carb adjusment

i have a 4.3 lx v6 motor with the merc 2bbl carb, what i want to know is for the rich/lean idle adjustment screw on carb which way is rich or lean?
i.e i screw in to make richer or screw out?

It really doesn't make any difference. You need to try both directions to see what is actually causing the problem and which way it actually smooths out the idle.

Being a 4.3LX, you may have the ignition that requires it to be in "base timing" mode to properly adjust the carburator mixture. In normal timing mode, the igniton constanly adjusts timing to maintain best idle, so adjusting the mixture in normal mode may give false results. It is easy to get into base mode by jumping two wires before turning on the ignition and starting the motor. There should be a couple of guys on here that can tell the wire colors, or maybe a link to the procedure.

thanks guys know about base timing and so on , am just trying to prove sumthing for fault finding just wanted to confirm which way to screw to get rich or lean thanks for your help
