Mercruiser 470 starter removal?

Hello,

I have a question as to the infamous "470". lol. I was having a problem with the boat not starting(or actually starting and the starter was still engaged) and then it would "diesel" even after taking the key out of the ignition. I would have to kind of bump the key to get the starter to dissengage to stop the motor.

I replaced the starter solenoid last night. After replacing it acted the same with the motor not stopping after taking the key out. If I bumped the key it would start everytime and the starter would dissengage.

Now the question is how to remove the starter. I see one of the nuts, but not the other one. Is there anything required to remove the starter? I think the starter is bad.

Any ideas, help, suggestions appreciated. This 470 is in a 1984 Chaparral.

THERES 2 bolt one on top and the other on the bottom. 1/2 bolts 12 point im pretty sure. theres no room for a socket, so 1/4 inch turns with the wrench. top one is easy, i got the bottom one from under the heat exchanger. then there a bracket on the back of the starter that needs to come off too, thats easy.

i dont understand what the starter has to do with dieseling? Dieseling occurs when there are hot carbon deposits in the motor which lite the fuel mixture. after a hard run lett the engine idle for at least 45seconds before turing off the motor.

I should have been more specific. The "dieseling" is the motor trying to turn over from the starter even after taking the key out of the ignition. The starter drive is not retracting back into the starter and is just spinning the flywheel.

Make any sense?

Um, no, not yet.


Give us a sequence of events and when the engine is running or not like this...

1.Engine off, key not in igniton, everything is at rest.
2.Put key in ignition and turn to START.
3.Engine does not start, return key to OFF position and remove key and starter is still energized and turning the engine over.

That is exactly what it does.

If i just bump the key I can get it to start and the starter to stay off, therefore running normally.

Sounds like the ignition is bad, not the starter. I would try a $20.00 ignition before you spend the money on a rebuild or new starter.

He could mean that he is bumping the ignition key to the START position and the solenoid is picking and unpicking quick enough to disengage the pinion.

If you have a test light on the START wire at the back of the starter motor, does it stay lit when you release the key? If so, then you have a key or solenoid problem. If the starter stays engaged without power applied, then you have a sticky pinion shaft in the starter motor itself.

If you have already determined all this and still need to remove the starter motor, then the bolts are a b1tch to remove... They will be VERY tight and difficult to access. As someone already said, you may have to get to one of them from the other side of the engine, under the heat exchanger and sump. I use a few mirrors and a torch (flashlight) or trouble light, floruo style. I have had a couple of boats that it was easier to remove the engine and work on the starter with the engine outside the boat....

This is what I mean by "bumping" the key to get it to start, and for the starter to disengage.

A friend and myself checked out the wiring/starer/ignition/starter solenoid last night. We came to the conclusion that the solenoid was done. Replaced it and the starter still didn't want to disengage.

Removed the starter tonight, I am going to try to get it repaired tomorrow.
