Well, back again to pester the forum pros with probably simple question. This time I need to know, is the outdrive on a 470 the same through hull bolt pattern, size, etc. as the 4.3 on the '91 Bayliner I acquired?

My 120 Mercruiser purchase fell through but I was contacted by a local who has a 77 Reinell with a Mercruiser 470, which is a great (supposedly) running 4 cylinder. He only wants $500 for the boat as it 'pops' in & out of reverse with any more than just off idle, throttle up. That part I'll hope is linkage. Anyway we're going for a river test next weekend. Thanks, again!

You need to do some research on the 470. You probably don't want to intentionally put one of those in your boat if it doesn't already have one.

I bought a trailer that I wanted for my Glastron & it came with a surprise 91 cuddy bayliner) boat, with no drivetrain. It supposedly came with a 4.3 & mercruiser (don't know model but the 'hole' is same shape as my 89 glastron mercruiser). this hull is headed to the transfer/scrap station possibly, if not 'repowered'. If I buy something cheap to throw in, we'll keep if for an extra putt-around. I have the glastron, a sanger hydro & kindsvatter, flatbottom already but since this had a cuddy, I thought we'd use it for camping overnight. Nothing cheap around with a v-6 but, these 4's & straight 6 boats are everywhere around here in the $300 to $900 range. I'd be concerned the straight 6 would fit in the doghouse so that's why I was concentrating on the 4's.

I have no idea how to post a picture on here but, here's some of my photo bucket links, sorry none of the outdrive hole at the moment.

I just finished googling 470 & I see it's basically half of a 460 & other than the alternator, didn't see any huge problems with them?

Re: Mercruiser 470

With the search on this site I found more info on 470's. I can see why the dislike but hey, lot's of people think the old hemi in the Sanger is a 'troublesome' engine, too. http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f336/b54406barrel/Sanger_0002.jpg It just has character!:)

Nothing's perfect & the 'fixes' don't seem difficult to me so if the 470 turns out clean (& will fit) I think I'm comfortable with it. The power/efficiency information on them seems quite good.

I did some research from info off the plate on the 'free' bayliner and it turns out to be a; 1990, 2052 bayliner cuddy. No where can i find any ID for what the missing drive train was, other than the fellow who I got it from told me he was told it was a 4.3 and the hole is obviously mercruiser.

Secondly, I mixed up the info on the 470's hull. The reinell I stated earlier was a 165 and the 470 is in a 1980 seaswirl. here's a small pic of it's out drive. http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f336/b54406barrel/5Y35F15Ja3G33M43J2c4g52bc0a3039ad1015_crop.jpg
As I said, I've found an even dozen cheap 4 & 6 cyl. & I'm getting them mixed up! Ha. Sorry for the mis-info earlier.

So back to the original question. Is this enough info to tell if the transom hole is compatible between the 1990 bayliner & the 470 on the seaswirl? Thank you.

Yes. Even if the original hole was for a Gen II, the only difference is the 2 screw holes at the top... Put the old transom housing on and you shouldn't have any problems...

Thank you. Unfortunately, there is no 'old' anything. There is the cut 'hole' in the transom, no hardware, what-so-ever of the old drivetrain. Sounds like I should be able to glass up those 2 old holes, if they are there & drill new to use the 470 housing. Thanks again.

Re: Mercruiser 470

OK... let's get this straight in one go...

You have a 1990 hull with nothing but a transom cut-out... You also have a old 470 that you'd like to fit to the '90 hull... If that's correct then, 'read my last'... The 'old' was a reference to the 470....

Sorry, old to me meant what I already had. Sorry for the error.
