Re: Mercruiser 5.0L MPI stalls during cold start

So I have an update. I replaced the IAC, and started the engine up in my driveway. I think it's working better, but I'm a little unsure, because while the idle rpm indicated on the Faria helm guage was steady, it still sounded like there was some up and down in the engine RPMs. Further, the Faria guage creeped up to 2000 RPM in idle, and it didn't sound like the engine was really running that fast.

So I'm sold on Don's advice that I need a scanner from Rinda. Looking at the adaptor options, there is one adaptor for the Mercuiser ECM-555, which is what Rinda said I need, and another Mercruiser CAN adaptor.

On the engine, there is a free connector labelled "Canline". I assume this is a CAN connection for Smartcraft, but can I also connect this to the diagnostic scanner? And if so would it buy me anything over the ECM-555 adaptor connection?

Call (as in telephone) Rinda, they can tell you exactly what you need.

I did, and when I told them what my engine was, they asked if it was an ECM-555. It is, of course, but when I check Mercury Marine's website for the engine specs I see these words describing the engine control system:

"ECM 555 with SmartCraft CAN Capability (PCM 555 w/DTS)"

So I'm just trying to double check what the Rinda sales person told me. The connectors on the adaptor are very different, and so far I've only found the "Canline" on the engine.

Do you have a Smartcraft gauge or DTS (Digital Throttle and Shift).

No I don't but I believe the engine has the capability to support at least Smartcraft. There's a "Smartcraft" label on the engine.

You only need the 94006 adapter for your engine.

Any thoughts on the cool fuel pump? Just looking through engine service parts and there is a filter part for it. There is no mention of this in the maintenance schedule? Will see if i can find a parts pic for it and post back.

Glenn,

Do you mean the fuel pump could cause this when it's cold? I hadn't thought about that. The manual I have shows two possible fuel filters, one for "Gen II" and one for "Gen III" engines. I'm not sure which I have, so I guess I'll have to look next time I raise the hatch. Are you thinking a clogged filter?

Tom

PS In case you haven't seen it, I have a followup thread here:

Hi Folks,

All of you have described precisely the problems that I am having with my 2005 5.0 MPI with Bravo 3 on a 220 CCR Crownline.

I am literally pulling my hair out and we have very limited resources in Mercruiser specialists here in Ireland.

I have tried ALL of the same things as yourselves except for new batteries although the ones I have are quite powerful (I don't have the specs to hand as I type).

Just wondering if you ever got any final conclusions ? I am getting worried at this point that it is ECM related.

Sincerest thanks for any update possible.

Albert.
