Mercruiser 5.7?

My friend just picked up a 72 SS 235 Slickcraft I know it had an origional 888 (302) ford. We opened the engine compartment and it's got a 98 mercruiser 5.7. The pevious owner said it was a 351. Is the 5.7 a ford 351 or a gm 350? I'm going to get my frind and new boat owner on here soon to get educated in the boating world. lol I'm sure he'll have lots of questions. I'll get the model and serial#s if it will help, but dont have them at this point. thanks

Update} A few web sights i looked at say the 351 ford is a 5.8 and the 350 is the 5.7. guess he didn't know what was in it. thanks

Merc didn't use any Fords in 98. An easy ID between Ford and Chevy is the distributor location.
Front of engine = Ford
Back of engine = Chevy

Gotcha Don, thanks. The guy who sold the boat said it was a 351, he was wrong. oh well. I'll get the serial #s so we can determan the right year too.

The boat had an 888 (302) ford So someone did the deed, because it has the origional OMC drive and it's a 5.7 (350) newer motor.

I scrapped 1 out a few years ago,...
Beautiful Hull,... Well built,+ still in darn good shape,...
Merc. 351 Ford/ 888 drive....
Hated to do it, but couldn't give it away....

Even more confusing now. The 888 is a Mercruiser model ID for a 302 Ford back in the early to mid seventies. Now you are saying it has an OMC outdrive? and a 5.7 in it now?
Got any pictures of this "Built of spare parts" boat?
Maybe we can figure out what is really in it

May i respectively ask that he starts a new thread with the pics. And any numbers he can supply.

Cause if it's a 72' omc it's a whole different story.
