Mercruiser 5.7 engine alpha one generation 2 outdrive. I aquired a new boat today. I am trying to remove the gimbal ring without having to take off the outer transom plate assembly. Can that be done without having to take the plate off. I seen a procedure here: http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/14/14b4.pdf . I ths that the way to do it or is there a better way. Thanks.

Pull the drive off, remove the trim position and trim limit sensors, remove the hinge pins and dont drop it on your toe.
Your done.

I assume you are talking about drilling the holes in the gimbal housing. That is how you do it without removing gimbal housing. The better way is to pull the engine and remove the housing. Curious, why do you want to remove the gimbal ring?

That is a pretty good reason:(. You might look at SEI replacement outdrives. Good luck.

That's how you remove the gimbal housing, not the gimbal ring ;)

Not exactly, that's how you remove a bellhousing, not a gimbal ring or housing.

Jr marine sells a kit that works out a lot better than the merc one.

Ayuh,... Sure, but ya gotta pull the motor, so you can work from the inside, as well as the outside of the hull...

Has any body used the kit on JR marine?

http://www.jrmarine.com/instructions.htm

So for my project im going to need the gimbal ring, bell housing and possibly an outdrive. I have the one that cam off of it. I will post some pics of it shortly and see if it can be rebuilt.

thanks

Ayuh,... That Bravo kit ain't gonna help you on an Alpha...

It takes maybe an hour to pull the motor,...
Then ya don't have to be drilling holes in the transom cover...

One thing about "pulling the motor", it is not quite the same as pulling a car engine, where you remove it entirely from the car. For a rebuild naturally you would, but in this case you just need access to the transom plate, so you may only have to lift the motor enough for the oil pan to clear and then move it forward (or push the boat back) enough to make room to do the job. So in your case (depending of course on how your boat is set up) pulling the motor may not as daunting a challenge as it first seems. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. Good luck.

Ok i need to kinda get my head around that i guess about pulling the motor. Heres some pics of the outdrive. See what yall think. I would like to rebuild if at all cost just to keep the expences as low as i can.

I know i will need the lower housing just because the fin is broke off.

Don't feel alone . . .

I just can't get past an automotive "bell" housing. The semantics are obviously important. My bad.

If I am not mistaken your bellhousing is also broken. With that amount of damage it would not be unreasonable to expect that there is damage to the gimbal housing where the upper and lower pivot pins are located. Rather than trying to repair what you have it might be easier and way less expensive to pick up an entire used unit (gimbal housing, bellhousing and ring). There is a nice looking one on e-bay for $700. Do a search for "mercruiser gen 2 transom". IMHO.
