Re: mercruiser alpha 1 coupler assempby problems

Please take everyone elses recomendations and do some alignment checks and the mounts.
But I had a coupler replaced for preventive maintainance reasons. The first time I took it out the coupler went again. I thought no way! This must be the prop now!The shop pulled it back apart and found that it was a defective coupler. The manufacturer paid labor and parts to have it replaced.
I know this is a remote possibility, but as I found out, it`s possible.
I believe you can find my previous post here about my experience.

Good luck on your repairs.

alignment issues

alignment issues

ok fellow mechanics! we put the coupler in replaced motor mounts and u joints but we cant get it to align! we cant slide the drive back in smoothly. is this due to bad alignment or is this normal due to the new o rings?

If your alignment bar slides in and out with ease it's not the alignment. Got it in forward gear? Shift shoe ligned up? Other than that -o-ring resistance and or air lock from over greased spline.

Are you using an alignment bar or tryiing to use the drive? If you don't have an alignment bar you will never get it aligned properly.

Re: (FRUSTRATING)mercruiser alpha 1 coupler assempby problems

still cant get the drive to slide in all the way! the alignment tool slides all the way in but the shaft binds about 1/2 in after reaching the splines! we are goin up and down with back motor mounts but nothing. today we hope trial and error will prevail after adjusting front and back motor mounts. we removed the shaft from the unit in order to make it easier to try and error! is it usually this difficult to get the alignment perfect? any tricks of the trade out there?

backs should be tight adjust front, remove the oring on front of shaft and see if it goes in all the way aster alignment then replace and install

correct the alignment shaft wont matter. it takes awhile to align if you dont kow what you are doing bt once you get it you will know. back bolts tight adjust the front little by little
