I am replacing my gimbal housing. Why can't I simply remove the outer gimbal housing without removing enigne? It looks like I just need to remove the four bolts on the transom? What am I missing?

Not knowing what year yours is I'll offer the following: Your four bolts, then steering linkage, intake water hose, maybe lube bottle (if you have one), shift cable, tilt trim wires, power trim hoses, Exhaust pipe (maybe Y-pipe, didn't mention engine). The exhaust connects to the gimbal housing not the transom plate. See large space in plate

Actually its 8 bolts /nuts for the housing , 4 bolts for the Y pipe, 2 bolts for the steering Don't see how you can get to all of this without pulling the engine.

Ayuh,.... The rear motor mounts are part of the transom housin',...
The motor sits ON the transom housin',....
There's No way to change the transom housin', with the motor in-place,....

I know there is an inner and outer plate. I was hoping to undue the bolts and drop the outer. I assumed the engine mounts were on the inner.

The inner transom plate simply lays flat against the transom. ALL the bolts and studs go through and into the outer. Even if you could get all the bolts and nuts out from the transom plate and exhaust pipe, which I doubt you could, there would be nothing left to hold the inner plate in place.
