my alpha one lost reverse, has no reverse whatsoever but forward works fine except it seems at times i actually have to pull it back into what would be reverse to get the prop to stop and come out of gear in forward.i havent pulled anything apart but i am guessing maybe a broken shift cable in the outdrive.everything appears normal with the shift cables from the controls to the top of the motor.help

Re: mercruiser alpha one outdrive

To check it. Take the shift cable to the outdrive off of the “shift plate??” (not sure of the name, the plate at the back off the motor where all the shift cables meet at). If you can push the cable in (or pull it out, not sure) and the drive goes into gear then you have stretched out you shift cable from the shifter to the plate. When you say it takes more travel of the shifter to engage and to disengage the drive that is the first thing I would think of. The motor doesn't have to be running. Just push/pull the cable then spin the prop by hand. If it locks the outdrive is fine.
