"'86 Mercruiser 140...
Is there supposed to be a spring on the "choke rod"?
At high rpm she is stalling out because the choke "cover'flap'" is opening up?
Thanks,
Bo

Re: Mercruiser choke

I could be wrong, but I think the choke flap only closes when the engine is cool on start up. Probably stalling for some other reason

Re: Mercruiser choke

as air flow increases the flap opens more. just like vacum secondaries. check fuel filter and siphon valve.

Re: Mercruiser choke

when the engine is warmed up, the choke should be completely opened and stay opened at all rpms. It does not work like vacuum secondaries, except maybe when the engine is cold and you want high rpms then it will open more for various reasons.
Just about all chokes are a heater type wire which expands when heated, either electrically when it's an electric choke or from engine heat off the intake manifold. It's not a spring, but will feel like one when you move the choke flap by hand. This needs to be connected, which will hold the flap open. If the flap just flaps around, that's bad and is your problem. If you're running at high rpms and need the choke flap somewhat closed to run, then you have a carb problem. Otherwise adjust the choke flap so it's fully open when the engine is warmed up and been running for a few minutes.
