This past summer, I had to replace the engine water circulating pump [Merc part # 850399 1] on one of the two new Merc Bravo 357 engines I bought in the fall of 2009. It sounded like the engine had thrown a rod or something when it happened out on the water. Luckily the boat has two engines, so we made it to our destination on just one engine at a much slower pace.
I was charged just over $300 for the new pump by my local Merc dealer. [That's the dealer price on just the pump itself up here in Canada,
which is another issue altogether] I tried to get the repair covered under warranty, however Mercury Marine refused to pay the bill because the one year factory warranty was up, despite the fact the engine only had 45 hours on it at the time.
I have since come to learn that there was some kind of issue with these pump bearings in quite a number of these same pumps, and that Mercury Marine then replaced the bearings in some of these pumps before they were sold or installed on any more engines.
Does anyone have any more detailed information about these pumps and their failure? If this was known defect, then I feel Mercury should definately cover the cost of this pump repair. In addition, I am concerned about the pump on the other engine as well, and am wondering when [rather than if] it will fail too...
Thanks for any info you can provide!
