Re: Mercruiser High Perf gear oil... Is it worth It??

Its not what will work for this oil change, Its whats the best for your boat in the long run.Different oils/gas/ any petroleum product have different detergents etc. that may affect seals, orings, breakdown at a lower heat.....etc. Who the hell knows. THIS is whats recommended for the unit if you use ANYTHING else then its your baby. Not all oils react the same at 4800 rpms. Ive seen ATF used in drive units but im damn sure not going to run it

Rod knocking is right when it comes to the two stroke oil debate.I have rebuilt a buttload of powerheads that failed at least partly because of substandard oil. This oil lead to excess ring coking and eventual serious scoring and sometimes seizure.Your Alpha drive ,however do'es not require the oil that came with it.Merc premium blend standard gear oil will work fine. The reason your Alpha is filled with this gear oil is that the plant in Stillwater makes all the drives there and some require HP.That means that at the end of the line they would have to have some guy saying that gets premium and that gets HP.So they all get HP, which really is the good stuff.Your drive do'es not require it and will do fine with the petroleum based product.

Your off the track, Rod Knocking. I was not talking about substituting to a differant formulation. I was refering to DIFFERENT brands with the same specifications....If you think that Merc will stand behind a "out-of-warranty" claim just because you use thier oil then use it, that would be the deal of the century....but I'd like to be around when you try to collect. The point is ( and I'm speaking from engineering experience)no can determine damage due to oil unless they spend $$$$ on lab and data analysis, anything short of that is just an opinion.
2 cycle oil is a different animal. Todays 2-stroke oil is formulated for lower EPA emmisions. Uncle Sam said 30wt motor oil and 40:1 mix ratio was harming the environment(and it was) so the 2-stroke manufactures went to the oil industry to come up with a formula that would widen this ratio
The end result being cleaner emissions with less lubrication.....This was a greater challenge to the engine manufactures than it was to the oil companies. The engines HAD to be designed to run with less lubrication. Of course this helped a great deal in preventing fouled plugs and carbon coking. Don,t run todays mix ratio in an old OB, they were happy with a quart of 30wt to 6 gallons of gas.

Did you ever compare Merc HP gear lube to other gear lubes on the market? They certainly smell and look different (don't ask about taste). The merc HP looks and smells a lot like 2 stroke oil as a matter of fact when I looked at my reservoir i thought someone dumped 2 cycle oil in until i opened a new bottle. other gear lubes look like gear lube. I am using Merc HP.

I am glad rod knocking isn't working on my motor since he would think it is a 2-cycle.

Anyways, rod knocking you are way off the topic here. You are comparing 2-cycle oils to 4-cycle gear lube.

If brand A has the same specs as brand B, but Brand A is offered at $12/gallon and Brand B is $15/gallon, what one would you buy?

If you prefer a brand over another, that is your choice, but if you think Mercury will void the warranty for their re-labeled Penzoil, that would be quite dumb and asking for a law suit. There is a reason why they recommend their oil... EASY MONEY!

As I stated before, Mercury DOES NOT manufacturer their own oil, they re-badge it!

Its like comparing a GMC Envoy to a Chevy Trailblazer, same damn SUV, different badging and slightly different pricing.

Mercury isn't stupid, but that one word they add... RECOMMENDED, makes people think that their oil is special

Amen Horndog, that was the point I was trying to make. There is no substitute for Quality oil but quality is what you will get with ANY name brand. Consumer reports done a scientic study on all major brands and did not find any significant difference between them. Engines and outdrives are the most reliable component in your boat if reasonably TAKEN care of. The hull usually rots away before the engine craps out. Merc engines are not rocket science, rather it is old and proven technology and so is the oil that protects them

Re: Mercruiser High Perf gear oil... Is it worth It??

Horndog I believe the markup on oil is 30% factory to dealer. Although im a technician, I dont work the parts counter. So dont quote me on that, and that would be factory oil I would have no idea on pennzoil. I dont sell it,wont sell it; why? I have a obligation to my customers to give them the best product for there engine. They all know where WALMART is. Its there decision wher to go and I wont make it for them Ill only recommend. So when there torndown for rebuild for 2-3weeks I can HONESTLY say I told you so. AH, Horndog your a engineer, Now I understand. Every engineer ive every met is a total ****ING IDIOT
