Hey guys, thanks for the help so far but I have 1 more question. I have a line on a Alpha outdrive from 1986 for cheap from a Mercruiser 170 I'm unsure of the year of the gimple, transom plate, exhaust..etc that I bought from another guy but it's absolutely Alpha gen 1 parts. Will this outdrive from 86 work? I believe it will since its pre 1991 but I wanted to ask you guys.

aCan't help you with your new drive, but I have one of the IC/IB/IC EX-shift drives. With the Chevy 230, 6 cyl.

Also fighting the tilt system, among other things.
Yea man, these early models are trash because of the no tilt feature and manual reverse lockout. I'm going with a full Alpha 1 upgrade and I have all the parts including the outdrive I pick up Sunday. So far I'll only be $600 deep in the conversion plus miscellaneous stuff so not too bad.
The motor was upgraded by the previous owner to a Mercruiser 140.

So that tilt pump has a brass line on the side. What's at the end of tha tbrass line in your boat? Mine, as it came to me was poorly connected to a container that used to be part of an upper unit oiler system. It leaks ATF in my engine compartment, and I wish I knew what was supposed to be there instead.

In the photo you posted, it look slike it is just capped. Is that right?
Yea its a cap with breather holes..they are low volume high pressure pumps with the reservoir on the bottom. They run ATF. It's what started this whole thing for me. There is zero info on these old pumps and even less parts unless for some reason you can salvage one out if an old boat. The newer pumps are high volume low pressure which means you need to change rams if you upgrade...newer ste rams requires newer outdrive which requires newer gimbal..etc. it's a domino effect. Might as well upgrade to an alpha 1 gen 1 assembly. I have 2 of the 1A/1B/1C outdrives if you're interested in them as well as the pump and complete assembly with 2 sets of rams. (edit: Rule #8)

Please read, 'n follow our posting rules, thank you, the Mod team,....

Just an update,
I bought a Alpha 1 outdrive from a guy with a locked up Mercruiser 170 for a steal today! Pulled off all of the old 1A/1B/1C assembly and I'll start assembling Alpha 1 everything tomorrow.

Nice that will be a huge leap forward in reliability and parts availability…

You.....are correct sir. While I had zero issues with the 165/MC1 on the last boat I restored. I'm looking for reliability in this build since I'll be partly using the boat in the Mississippi and adjoining rivers here in Missouri. The 140/Alpha 1 combo on the 18' aluminum Starcraft should push it nicely.
