If you had a hole in the drive bellow and it's already been repaired, remove the drive again and check the ujoints, gimble bearing and engine alignment. Do the neccessary repairs and reinstall the drive before boating anymore.

And like AlanR said, check the drive oil for water. Wouldn't hurt to replace the water pump impeller too.

That is because there was water in the bellows. The seal is not designed to keep water out, only oil in. Then the water causes the yoke to rust and causes the inputshaft seal to leak.
Water in bearings and ujoints and drives gets very expensive. That is why those bellows need changed before they go bad not after.

Have the drive disassembled, internals checked, replace any worn/bad parts, & re-sealed....
An expensive process.....
For about $1200.00 you can get an aftermarket drive from S.E.I. that would be a direct, bolt on replacement....
You can find them on ebay......

Not only the drive, but he needs to replace the gimble bearing and u-joints if there was water in there! :'(

Re: Mercruiser outdrive noise

But Don, someone that waits two months after he hears the noise to do something about it is not going to do anything to prevent it. And some lucky mechanic is going to be able to feed his family another week, marina owner will be able to make another payment on his BMW, etc. I hope boat owners never get smart or the whole economy will get screwed up.
