Mercruiser outdrive question

I have a 1985 '28 Century Meridien Cabincruiser with a 260 hp v8. My outdrive is completely ate up(was in saltwater for several years) and cannot get me on plane. I was told it all needs replaced. I am not sure but I think it is an Alpha 1 outdrive on there currently??? What types of outdrives would be compatible with what I have? 233? 888? Merc 2? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would put a new SEI drive on that boat. http://www.sterndrive.cc


For the trailer, You MUST use a trailer that's legal size/wt in your state. It doesn't matter how far you go, if you use a trailer that's obviously too small, (and you don't kill someone with it)..... the local cops will still give you a ticket for being overloaded etc.....

If it can't get you up on plane and it is still working.There is a different problem.If it's really corroded,transom too there is gonna be a lot of work.
They didn't make a 240hpV-6 in that year(I'm thinking ever).
Any Mercruiser OD that came off a V-8 will work correctly.
V-6 I-6 4cyl all have different gear ratio.J

Sorry I looked again it is a 260 hp v6 NOT a 240 hp. I am looking at putting a used outdrive on, which is why I am wondering what is compatible. I have a line on a 233 and 888 and possibly an alpha 1. Just wondering what is best to use and which ones will actually be compatible. I am very sorry for not having my facts straight, I know your time is valuable. Thanks again for any help.

If it is 260 HP it is a V8

Yes, you're correct. It looked small and I assumed. 8 spark plugs, so it is a
v8. Thanks for pointing that out.
