Mercruiser shuts down after shifted into gear

I am replaced my shift cable and complete outdrive with a SE106 drive. I adjusted the shift cable per the manual and also it matched the old cable and shifter placement exactly. I have a 1983 mercruiser 228. I have only run it with the muffs and have not had it to the water yet. When I shift it into forward gear it works fine at idle but when I throttle up at all the kill switch engages and shuts it down. It does not kill the engine when it is in neutral and I rev it up. I read a couple places on the internet that if the prop does not have a load on it as in the water then the kill switch will trip. Can anyone shed some light on my problem or is it not a problem and it is working like it should? Thanks

Shift cable is mis-adjusted.........sounds like your cable is still not adjusted properly.......does it go into reverse cleanly???

Yes it goes in and out of forward and reverse with no problem

I read a couple places on the internet that if the prop does not have a load on it as in the water then the kill switch will trip.

That is incorrect.

Without a load on the prop, the shift interrupt will not engage at all - or at least it shouldn't. The fact that it is engaging now on muffs means your cable is either not adjusted correctly, or there is another problem. Try disconnecting the cable and see if it pulls / pushes smoothly while an assistant turns the prop by hand in the appropriate direction. (Engine not running of course! )
