Hi

I have calling every mercruiser dealer here in Denmark (and quite a few in Sweden) to buy some Mercruiser Splines Grease.

They all claim that they use Mercruiser 2/4 grease for the engine coupler splines.

Anyway - i want to use the correct Mercruiser Splines grease on my mercruiser - so can anyone help me finding a WEB shop where i can order the correct grease? I havent found any webshops that has the Splines grease.

Re: Mercruiser Splines Grease

That's a shame you can't get it there, it lasts longer and works so much better than the 24C. I've used both and there is a big difference.
I just typed in Mercruiser Spline Grease into google.com and got this. Not sure which of the places can ship to you or who has the best price, but after looking, you might want to buy it by the case and sell it to the dealers :%

Re: Mercruiser Splines Grease

Do you have Castrol products over there?
Castrol Pyroplex Blue.
I'm pretty sure that's what Mercruiser spline grease is.

ill probably get bashed for this but.. i use pool and spa pump bearing grease. its dupont krytox. its a water resistant, almost water proof. and its unaffected by temperature. dosnt melt or wash off. i use it on prop splines and anything that gets in water or around it. i use it on impellers to. it stays on there for almost 6 months. and i use my boats alot.

Talked to the tecnicians at Castrol - they investigated it and confirms that Mercruiser Spline grease and
Castrol Pyroplex Blue should be the same stuff

Castrol Pyroplex Blue is also sold under the BP brand(energrease LCX 6002) they told me

It is some sticky blue stuff - almost imposible to wash off your hands:=

Do you suppose it would be good for trailer wheel bearing grease as well? A guy can only have so many grease guns. It would be good to be able to kill two birds with one grease gun.

Re: Mercruiser Splines Grease

We grease our entire fleet of 30 pieces of construction equipment with it.... perfect for trailer wheel bearings.

I would order NLGI 1, but any viscosity fine for this kind of thing.

Should be perfect for trailer bearings. Here is a product data sheet:

I have same problem with too many grease guns - from now on i will only have 3 GG`s

-2/4 for general use on all my machinery
-Splines Grease for splines trailer bearings etc.
-Gimbal grease for gimbal bearing

Think i should be covered with theese 3

Hmmm ........ In my workshop i think i have at least 25 other greases ..Copper grease (brakes) - rubber grease (for brake system rubber) - some special BMW greases - and good knows how many others that have gathered in my workshop over the years - maybe i should clean up and throw away all grease that i cannot recal having used the last couple of years.......

Pyroplex Blue will work very well in Gimbal bearings.

Wonder why Merc has a Spline grease, but for the gimbal bearing and Ujoints, they have a different grease that is a different color, different consitancy, different texture, and differnt properties. Oh, and it's called Ujoint and Gimbal Bearing grease, not spline grease.

Don't mind me, just thinking out loud.

Re: Mercruiser Splines Grease

This may be an answer to a rhetorical question, but if we think about what the grease is there to do, I see two completely different design goals. This is not to say at a grease couldn't be built that will do both, but they seem to be at cross purposes here.

For the splines, the only movement that the bearing surfaces are going to see is slow, very short displacement, sliding forces. You'd want a grease that would be very, very sticky and have a high yield strength (to avoid the bearing surfaces from touching each other).

For the gimbal and U-joints, the bearings are moving and rolling. This means that you need a grease that will flow, allowing enough contact so that the bearing will roll, not slide.

My BMW motorcycles have always needed the drive splines greased at regular intervals. The grease of choice for many other riders is a Honda product called something like Moly 60. This was designed specifically for this type of application. I haven't tried this on my V/P, as I used the Sierra spline grease.

Not sure what point that I'm trying to make, if one was needed at all, but I think that you will need different greases for these two very different applications.

Later,

johnbo

John, it reminds me of a couple of old sayings.

Jack of ALL trades, Master of none.

Then there is the ever popular phrase in bondo's signature:

"Any Grease, Is Better,..... Than No Grease At All".........

Up here, the spline grease is $20 a tube... I think that's why they have another, the regular ol' EP grease is all the gimbal and ujoints require for $4/tube.
Putting Spline Grease in the u-joints is kinda feeding Lobster to the cat...

And I Truly Believe,.......
That if you just Pumped in Plain ole EP Chassis Grease,......
At the Regular Recommended Intervals,......
You Wouldn't experience Any Increase in Grease Related Failures...........

That's Why I Say,........................

Re: Mercruiser Splines Grease

as far as the dupont krytox. its 4.99 a tube at the pool shop. make sure you use gloves to put it on or youll be at the sink for hours washing it off. its great on splines. i dont recomend putting it on gimbals. i dont know how well it flows though. directions say that it would be fine but. like i said i use it on outdrive orings, impellers, couplers, splines

Here are the lab tests results for Castrol PYROPLEX. Tests preformed for several uses.

I am trying to find similar testing reports for spline grease.
