Mercruiser stalling when shifting into Neutral

Hey there, first post here. Just bought a super clean '94 Genesis. Full records back to orginal sales brochures, receipts for everything, anal retentive maintenance it's entire life.

My problem is that about 9/10 shifts from either FWD or RVRS into NEUTRAL will kill the engine. It sounds like it dies electrically as there is no faulter or hesitation... it simply dies.
My throttle handle will allow me (via an extra button on the lower part of the handle) to rev the engine without engaging the prop. The engine does not stall when going into neutral from this position.

I've done some serious searching and found multiple references to a "nuetral assist switch" and "lower shift cable". Do I sound like a candidate for either of these.

Here are some threads of interest:

Any help would be great. I'm a good mechanic, have all the tools, and a couple manuals included with the boat. Somebody point me in the right direction.

That is a typical problem when the shift cables starts going bad, as it gets worse, it will also do it when going into gear. Time to replace the cable.
Since you forgot to mention which drive you have, I have to assume you have a 94 Alpha I Gen II drive.
Here is a link to the online free OEM service manual. http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/14/14cover.pdf

Section 4A tells how to replace it, section 2A for adjustment.

Re: Mercruiser stalling when shifting into Neutral

I was hoping it was just a switch... something that I could adjust the clearance of. If it's the cable, would a fairly competent home mechanic (capable of doing my own brakes, clutches, timing belts, engine swaps) with an extensive set of tools have any problem with changing/adjusting the cable?

I was given two large manuals (Haynes/Chiltons or similar) for both the engine and outdrive. As I'm failry new to boat mechanicals, are there any special tools or considerations when doing this procedure.

I'll read thoroughly through my books when home, but asking here can't hurt.

Why not read Don S link to the OEM manual for your drive?...
It will be far more helpful than a Seloc or anything else....
I promise you......:)
It sounds like you will be able to DIY.....;)

^Awesome!!!
If I find that I can't properly adjust, is there a forum sponsor or online discount place the forum members like to send business to for buying the parts I need, whether it be OEM or generic aftermarket parts.

For this online community in general, is there a bias towards "you should support your local marina/boatstore", or "local places are rip-offs, go here xxx@xxx.com for your stuff." I don't have a local place yet, so an online favorite or "source" would be great to know.

I think that the only biasyou will find here, is do it right, and use marine parts where required. As far as by local or shop online, get what you can, where you can. You have access to West Marine, Boaters World and several Merc dealers in your area. Online options? Right here at iboats, MercStuff, and MercruiserParts.com. The last one sell genuine Merc parts at a slight discount.

Also, if you read section 2A from the link that DonS gave you and are still uncomfortable adjusting your shift cable, perhaps you may be better off letting someone else handle the replacement also.
