Re: mercruiser starter mounting bolt broken

First of all,did it break coming out or tighting it up? if it broke going in you might be in luck. Drilling a case harded bolt in the boat upsidedown is next to inposible, however,if it broke going in it might easy to get a 5/16 left handed drill bit and it might grab it just enough to bring it flush with the block. the good part of this is, the threads are recesed about a 1/4 inch. If you get it flush find someone with a DREMEL TOOL with a cutoff wheel then you can grind a grove in the bolt and use a screw driver to work it out. Don't worry about the groving in the block the little bit won't hurt because theres no threads there.
I HAVE DONE THIS. Good luck

i just did this job in june it was on the starboard engine and the starter was to the inside took a punch and centered it as best i could then took a small bit with a right angle drill and drill a pilot hole then took a cobalt bit and slowly like 3 hrs worth drill it out then took a clean out tap and tapped it out worked great . put case hardened bolts back in

Q). Is this particular "hole" that the broken bolt is in, 'tapped' through the block, allowing access from the top?

And...because of the way I think about mechanics, when the starter was replaced in May, 4 months ago, did it ALREADY have a broken off bolt and only one holding it in? 4 months on a new starter isn't much!...sl

I tend to see the glass half full.

I had the same thing happen with my old 2.5L. Haven't done anything about it yet because there's a piston cracked in it too. Speaking of that.......BONNNNNDO!!!! How much for the 3.0? I have that engine in my other boat and love it. Do you have an outdrive too?
