Someone please help me. I have a 1975 sea ray with a 1991 mercruiser engine. I have problem with the tilt, it will go down but i can't get it to go up.
On the solenoid i have 2 big terminal on the sides and two smaller terminal on the front that are labeled S & I. there is nothing on the I terminal not sure if there should be anyhting there it was like that when i bought it. I have had this boat for 3 years and i am ready to set this thing in the water. anyone have any ideas where i can start looking for this problem. i have no knowledge of meters or anything of that sort but i do have one and i can learn real easy. PLEASE HELP ME GET THIS BOAT IN THE WATER.

FYI

A solenoid marked S & I is a ford starter solenoid. Not a trim solenoid.
S being starter and I being ignition. S is where you hook the wire form the switch that activates the starter and I goes to the + side of the coil to boost start voltage. Also it is an internally grounded solenoid. It can be used in a pinch but the attachment bolts need to be grounded.

Check the manuals as directed.

tHANKS FOR THE HELP> I FOUND THE PROBLEM TO BE A BAD SOLENOID. I JUMPED THE TWO LARGER TERMINAL ONTHE SIDE AND THE MOTOR STARTED GOING UP.

it does not go up with the trailer button either?

Sometimes the trim limit switches go bad and you can only raise the drive with the trailer button...

Re: Mercruiser Tilit/trim Goes Down Not Up!

I had a problem with tilt up as well. Come to find out, it was the trim limit switch that needed adjustment. right beside the trim motor and reservoir are Two solenoids. The top one is the trim up, bottom one is trim down. on each solenoid are 4 terminals, two big, two small. One of the small terminals goes to ground, the other one is the one that gets power from the trim switch. if you jump from the big lug that has power all the time to the small terminal that is not grounded, on the upper solenoid, you should hear a click, and if the motor works, the motor will run, trim will go up.

If you hear no click, solenoid is probably shot, then jump from the big lug that has power all the time to the other big lug on the upper solenoid, that will bypass the solenoid all together and get your tilt up temporarily. Only do this sparingly, as it is too much current for a little jumper wire.

By the way, if the first test works and makes the trim work up, try taking the trim limit sensor apart and cleaning it. it is at the pivot of the outdrive on the port side

also, INDY is right, if the trailor button works to raise the drive, chances are the limit switch needs adjusting, or replacement
