Mercruiser trim tilt not working

I checked my 3 pin connector at the trim motor pulled it apart and found corrosion on the pin cleaned it off and it started to work then it died again, I jumped the red terminal to the up and down solenoids and they worked, I am thinking that this round connector is making a bad to no good connection. Can I disconnect cut out the connector and put a water proof 3 pin automotive connector in it's place? The trim tilt would sometimes work and not, it could be up or down that would stop working!

Before you start cutting wires....
Soak both connections in Vinegar (a mild Acid) for 10 minute) and then try cleaning with a Q-Tip or some Scotch-Brite if you have it.
Fill the connector with grease and see if it becomes reliable again.

And you can even use a bit of sandpaper but the MAJORITY of those type problems are based on dirty corroded connections :)

Ayuh,.... Absolutely,.... Sand, 'n Clean to Shiny metal Clean, startin' at the Battery connections,...

Right through the circuit to the Motor itself,...

Then Grease the connections to keep 'em that way,...

Re: Mercruiser trim tilt not working

having the same problem. happy spring, right?

i get nothing from my trim/tilt. if i wire the pump manually to the battery it works fine, so i'm assuming there's an issue with wiring.

replaced both solenoids, still nothing.

checked both fuses (20v [x1], 110v [x1]) - both look fine. does anyone know what that 110v fuse looks like when it's blown? it's not a traditional fuse - when disassembled, it simply looks like a bunch of washers and bolts. nothing appeared scorched/blown.

i'm not a pro with my volt meter, but it looks like i'll have to become one. any tips on how i should attack the problem? thanks.

you can check continuity from one side of the fuse to the other and that will tell you if the fuse is bad.

Shoiuld really start your own post so it dosent get lost . power comes from the batt ,thru the main 110A block to the brass buss bar. from there a 20A takes the power thru the 3 prong plug up to the control handel. control handel energizes the solenoids.
So, you need 2 wires to make it work a good positive and a good negative connection. page 5A-60

Re: Mercruiser trim tilt not working

Thanks for replies went out with a jumper wire, on the round connector, jumped red to green went down, went red to blue nothing, maybe a bad female lug on connector, if I jump red to either solenoid it works up and down, further trouble shooting tomorrow!

Be sure it went down all the way before you start back up.
If it is still above the Trim Limit Switch, it may not go back up.

RED/WHT to GRN/WHT = DOWN
RED/WHT to PUR/WHT = Trim UP (Through Limit Switch)
RED/WHT to BLU/WHT = Tilt/Trailer UP

-------------------------
Yes, I know you said Blue; but nothing about the Purple/White
Sometimes the wire colors can look odd over the years.
Just covering all options.

I disconnected the trim limit switch to isolate the problem for now, Also I find that the pig tail connector on the trim limit switch was all green corrosion!

Re: Mercruiser trim tilt not working

I took a male spade and pushed it into the 3 female sides, if I jump the 2 opposite slots power trim goes down, if I jump the the top slot I get nothing, if I put power to the blue down solenoid directly the trim will go down, Anybody have any suggestions ? Thanks

If the plug is suspect, you can cut it off and wire directly to the small lugs of the solenoids. Can also use a 3 conductor replacement plug and wire it the same way.

Is there anyway to check that lug to be sure that it is bad ?

Re: Mercruiser trim tilt not working

use a meter between the small solenoid lug and the female part of the plug

Re: Mercruiser trim tilt not working

checked with meter, have a weak buss on the blue female lug, soaking in vinegar to see if it cleans up, pretty sure its corrosion in that plug seems to be a bad connection, other green and red have a strong buzz from mutli meter blue weak intermittent buzz !

No but I did take apart the rocker switch. It will not go up only down, even if I jump with a piece of wire, may be bypass rocker switch at throttle handle?
