i have 2 mercurays one has a band the other has a split cover they are 85 &65 why is this. the 85 has a band.

Not sure what your question is... The 85 is likely the carry over motor from the 1960s when all Mercs 20hp and up had the wrap-around cover. The 65hp 3-cylinder was the first Merc to use the split cover in 1973. Other Mercs followed suit as new designs came in. I think the last wrap-around motor was either the 4-Cylinder 45 (Classic 50) or the inline six in the late 1980s/early 1990s. The wrap-around design dated back to 1954 when they first came out on the 40hp Mark 50...<br />- Scott

what i was wanting to know was the mercks i have is the same year modle but they have different type covers i never seen a merc with the split cover before just curious to why the different covers. not much on mercs . but i bought one cheep . the other one was given to me just to git it out of the yard .boat motor & traylor.the 85 hp on a bass boat had a now tilt trim [aftermarcket] cost 600.00 paid 600.00 for the whole autfit. so i am in the merc buisness now . plus the 3 johnnyrudes i already have . o yes my little 9.9 chrysler.boats motors runing every where and not a dealer my wife o
