dave now that's just plain funny......Hero, I know some people enjoy working on these old motors, and i am sure you are finding this to be very rewarding, nothing like rebuilding an engine and hearing that first time it fires back up after being in a hundred pieces. I was mostly just trying to stir up some trouble and poke a little fun, I hope it works out well for you.

You both are great, good laughs!!! It's seriously like Christmas when the UPS truck stops. We all bum rush the door to open the boxes! Totally unreasonable but absolutely hilarious.
I did end up starting this project for no other reason than exactly that. Its been too damn cold to paint the boat or do any fiberglass work on the restore.

Thanks for the humor; great way to close out the work day ... the garage was a little frustrating today!

the bottom of the lake was a good idea...I will never understand you tower guys, much better motors available IMO, like a late 80s model V-6

because NOTHING sounds like a merc inline screaming down the lake... SEXY.

i agree..nothing sexier than a 6 cylinder outboard winding it out and kicking up a big ole rooster tail..better than viagra but if it is an inline tower it is usually followed by a loud clang around 6100 RPMs then all gets quiet as you listen to him dial his buddies cell phone for a tow. Then the cussin starts.

lol agreed, with the inlines it is best to keep er around 5500 rpms.. 5800 if you like to flirt.

Did you try surplusunlimited.com for the engine wiring harness?

To pull the flywheel usually requires a puller. The crank has a "W" ground into it instead of a woodruff key. Use 5/16" fine thread bolts with the puller. Remove three of the bolts around the flywheel nut and screw them in. A Harmonic Balancer puller should work.

I have heard you can wind the V-6 motors up to around 7K with %50 extra oil added in. I probably would not do it though.

I got the flywheel off by taking it to a local guy a while ago ... cost $60 but he had the right tools and it was cheaper then the mercury puller so I guess it was all right ...

cant you pull that fly wheel with a harmonic balancer puller??? they are about $15 at harbor frieght..works great on all my OMC motors..I have a 86 150 V-6 merc..but I never had to pull the fly wheel.

IMO, you should have gotten the tool. I got mine for my inline for 40.00 shipped from amazon. Has a lifting eye and everything. IT really does make moving the motor around a whole lot easier, i have my moneys worth already.

Just wanted to jump in here and say that I'm enjoying the thread and wish you the best of luck! I started in a similar path with a 3 cyl 70 hp Merc. I've got a 1972 Mariner, 115 inline 6 out in the yard in about the same shape... and far too many projects. I'm trying to decide if I want to sell for parts or fix it up... I don't need it... but nice to have an extra ready to go or to sell... It was running fantastic before the lower unit got stolen. Now all the wiring is the same as you had... crumbling crap.

I also wanted to jump in and say the best of luck to you also.I just got done completly rebuilding a 78 90hp inline 6 ( those inlines sure do sound good ) will be testing her out this weekend. Its always a pleasure to see a project like this being done. I put mine on a 72 15 foot starcraft tri hull.

Yea ... I didn't find (or think) to buy it off-line until later. I checked around local shops to see if I could order one and they were $100.00 or more. The Mercury shops said that the flywheel threads weren't universal, but I found an exact match from the replacement Merc part number. I might buy it anyways to lift the motor onto the boat. I dont want to trash either the motor or transom on the install.

For everything so far, I have about $2,000 into it and the satisfaction of doing it myself. I'm sure I could have spent that on a running used motor, but I liked the thought of a home done rebuild. Its been easy so far ... just alot of time. I'll prob turn around and sell the specialty tools like the hone and stuff on ebay when I'm done. I have a box of about $300 worth of resale which should hopefully cut some of the price. I have also done alot of extras... I decided if I was going to jump in, I was certainly going to get wet.

Sorry guys, fell behind a little. The weather has been amazing here in Michigan so I have been out working as much as I can. I got all the pistons off and cleaned. There was a crap ton of carbon on them and several rings were stuck, I'm sure the compression on the beast was god awful before I tore it apart. Cleaning all the parts is a long, boring and painful process. Everything is caked in grease and unreasonably dirty.

I took all the major parts of the outboard to a local shop to get blasted ... with glass that is, no sand. It going to cost $80 to get just about the whole motor done. Well worth it if you ask me. Picked up some paint and primer. Zinc Chromate for the primer and regular phantom black outboard paint. Found the OEM stickers on ebay for $60 ... which isn't too bad considering they are hard to find and it has everything in the kit.

I had a paper with some comments and questions somewhere but I misplaced it ... damn...

I guess I will call it a day and serch for the paper. My mind is kind of all over the place. Truly excited to be making such good progress and see some of the results (clean pistons) on the work bench. Any commments or recomendations regarding this stage of my project are totally welcome ... and awesome!

What a total PITA! I have been restoring my future father-in-laws Champion Bass Boat for the past year and finally broke the ice on the motor.:facepalm:

The motor is a big piece of ... Mercury 1150

Broke open the cover and started poking around. The wires are shot and fall apart at the touch. Decided to see if she would start anyways. First try was a no go caused by a dirty bendix drive on the starter. Cleaned it off and on the second try I got flywheel movement. By movement, I mean slightly turning without a start. The starter smelt like burnt toast; its original and prob needs replacing anyways.

I attempted to hand turn the flywheel and it was a little tight. Figured its cause it hasn't been cooking in about 3 years. My original though was to rebuild with the basics: carbs, fuel pump, water pump, starter, plugs, gear oil. HERE'S THE CATCH!!

I looked up the S/N online which says the motor is a 1977 HOWEVER; the power plant is defiantly not a 1977. No distributor on it and my guess is that it?s from around '79 based on my research. Not sure the best route for determining what serial number group to order new parts.

ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!

This pig is broke down to the lower end, power plant and exhaust extension sections.
Everything I listed as an intentional replacement have been removed ...
