Re: mercury 1150 troubles????

did it run any better? it sounds like you might still have a break in a wire. I had a Johnson coil act up only when the engine warmed up. The heat from the engine would be enough to open the hairline crack causing it to "ark" but only when it was warm. Couldn't see the crack until I saw sparks coming from it. Figured this out while running it in low to no light.

Re: mercury 1150 troubles????

A MIRACLE HAS HAPPENED, I THINK? first lets break it back down.

PROBLEM:
(1977 merc 1150 I6) LOSES POWER @ WOT.

SOLUTIONS: (trial and error)

1. Cleaned fuel filter and checked fuel pump diaphrams. (they where fine) (no luck)

2. Checked spark on all 6 plugs (good) and installed new plugs for the heck of it. (no luck)

3. Found gas tank ventilation problem. (Fixed)(helped with one problem) (different problem arose) (kinda) now more like missing.

4. Replaced water pump impellar, engine was running real hot. (pees like a race horse now) I can actually touch the power head..LoL (but didnt help the problem)

5. Cleaned carbs. (no luck)

6. New pump ball and fuel line to a new auxillary tank. (no luck)

7. Taped the plug wires. (stopped the little sparks, but still no luck)

8. Found an auto parts store that sells universal 7mm, hi-heat, double silicone, copper core wires. $20.00 WOW took a little time and patience, but saved me a hundred bucks.. (no luck)

Took it to the lake today after the new plug wires installed. Still ran ****ty..
Decided to check the plugs for spark again, and OH MY>>>>>> #3 and #5 look like the ends where welded.. It has the no gap, or true gap spark plugs, and the whole bottom was covered in what looks like metal, and I cant scrape it off... ??? Could this be metal shavings from the rings or cylinder was when this thing was running hot??? And why only on #3 and #5???? Weird!!!!

However I replaced the 2 plugs, and she ran like a champ for like 3 hours straight then it got dark, the hole time between 3800 and 5000 rpms... I THINK ITS FIXED, I WILL TAKE IT TO THE RIVER TOMORROW AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS..

Oh yeah, I also still have a ventilation problem with the main fuel tank ( ALL ALUMINUM TANK ) It keep sucking the new pump ball flat. It dies within like 5 minutes, then I switch back over to the plastic auxillary 6 gal. tank runs fine... Also with the aluminum tank I keep getting crap in the fuel filter, like purplish hard, i dunno almost feels like metal.. (I HEARD THAT METAL OR ALUMINUM TANKS CAUSE PROBLEMS????)
I'll keep ya'll posted.. Thanks again for all the support...

You need to re-check the timing to 21 degrees MAX advance, use good (mid-grade) gas, and prop it to run in the high 5's at WOT.

Continued use as it sits WILL finish off some pistons.

-W

Would have been cheaper to spend $25 at sears for a timing light. :D

If you have one of these oldies... it's really good to learn to maintain it - or the Brunswck Machine (tm) will get you.

-W

Re: mercury 1150 troubles????

Actually with my experience on timing, (NONE) much cheaper this way.. besides the mechanic used to own the boat so he set timeing, the advance, the idle, and throttle stop, plus checked the spark amounts???? on each cylinder all for $25.00, fair deal i thought. Boat runs great, so i am guessing the lack of fuel (no lubrication)and the overheating caused the problems with the metal shavings or whatever on the plugs.
One other question though, this motor is a jet, and when i turn left or right it feels like it loses power, the rpms only drop from 50 to 200 rpms, then back up to normal, when you straighten the steering up...but it dont feel like its like a drag from the foot of the jet. i dunno... i can live with it, but it just doesnt completely feel right.. Thanx for the help, Brian
