I am purchasing a 14' fisher avenger sc with a side console. The boat weighs 640 lbs. My choices are a 15hp mercury bigfoot 4 stroke vs a 25 hp mercury 2-stoke; both retail for about the same price. I have read the posts on 2 stroke vs 4 stroke but believe I will get better performance form the 25hp.

The dealer says that the bigfoot will plane the boat and I should reach approximately 13 mph. I would really appreciate any comments. My previous motor was a 15hp 2-stroke and I seldom got to 10 mph with a 14' sea nymph angler which is about half the weight.

All help would be much appreciated. Thanks,
JJB

The bigtoe would be a real mistake. It has the wrong type of gearing for your application and not enough power.

25 hp is an absolute no brainer.

Sounds like something is not right on your other setup. 15 HP on a 300 lb boat should scoot pretty well - say 15-22 mph.

A couple guidelines I have heard. 50 lbs per horse and a 15 will plane 1000 lbs. 640 + motor + 1 average guy will put you there. No battery, no gas, no gear.

25 for sure, unless you can get more. :)

Agreed. 25 is the way to go! Have an 03 25 EL on my 14' FG. With me alone I can do 29 (GPS). I could probably do better with a better sized prop as I can get 7000 at wot. I do like the hole shot. We just watch the tach and keep it below 6000.
