Hi Everybody,

I have been busy reading and learning and now I need to post. I have just replaced the water pump and impeller from my 150 that has been in storage for about 10 years. I do have one question that was not mentioned in the repair book.
When I assembled the lower unit and aligned the drive shaft, there was mention of rotating the prop shaft if needed to align the drive shaft splines.
If I move the prop shaft with the gear in forward, I can rotate the prop clockwise and get a clicking sound but the drive shaft does not move.
I know it is engaged in forward so I was wondering if there is some kind of clutch in the transmission to allow the prop to slip at slow speeds.
I did assemble the lower unit and start the motor and the forward, neutral, and reverse all work as expected.
I was just wondering if the slipping is normal?

Yes you have the "EZ-Shift" lower unit used after 1979 they ratchet especially when slowing quickly from WOT.

The ratcheting is normal. To get the driveshaft to turn, you have to move the prop backwards. I try very hard to barely move it. That helps insure that the vanes on the impeller stay aimed in the right direction, and it usually requires very little movement to get the splines to line up.
