Hi i have a merc 1500 1977 i think i have a 19 pitch prop on it the problem is when it runs fine it goes great but it occasionally runs like a dog at full throttle sometimes it will bog down but it sounds like it is trying to get up and go this may go on for 10 mins or so then it will just clear itself and get up and go again while it is running bad we can smell a lot of fuel that is obviously not being burnt . can anyone help with some advice as to where to start

immediately check your spark on all 6, when it starts to act up.

Kiwi, If that motor is truely a 1977, it is the last year of the distributor ignitions motors. As TD said, check spark on all six, watch for arcing from the plug wires to ground, and check the plugs to see if they are vey clean (water is steam-cleaning them). After these tests pass, see if the fuel pump diaghram is leaking fuel into the crankcase.

Ler me modify my answer a bit. The 1977 1500 was the last year of the inline six, 150 HP motor. It became a 140HP motor in 1978. The distributor ignition lasted a couple of years longer.

i have a 1977 mercury 1500. i took it out and drove it for about 10 mins and it ran like a top then it just killed and wouldnt restart for anything..... the fuel filter was milky white and the bottom carb was dripping this milky white stuff into the cowling.... havent tried anything with the motor fuel pump or carbs because im a noob any suggestions what the problem might be or how to get her running again????

Might get better response if you starts a new topic...

Your problem....
Drain the engines fuel system ( hoses/pump/carbs, fill up with NEW FRESH fuel ( with 2% TCW-3 approved 2-stoke oil ), flush some of the new fuel tru the system....start the engine .

If you have a built in tank you could try a 6 gallon removable tank...

Your problem are probably water in the fuel....from a leak or from the fuel itself ( E10 ?? )
