hi,this is my first post, ive just bought a early nineties mercury 15hp and need a bit of help,it originally had a tiller but has been converted to remotes, its hasnt been used for a few years so i decided to give it a bit of a spruce up,the throttle was sticking so i removed the plastic lever arm and cleaned it but unfortunately cant remember how the 2 springs go back(see enclosed attactments) if anybody could point me in the right direction that would be great
thanks in advance
Andy

Re: mercury 15hp

My Merc 15 is outside, under a tarp, in the rain. If/when the rain stops (I'm in Vancouver - it might not be till May) I'll go out & see if I can get you more clues.

Hey Soley

Did you get the throttle back together?

I brought my 15 indoors, so can take some photos if you still need help with it.

Here are 2 shots. First is Neutral position, Second is full speed ahead.

We're facing motor from starboard, tiller to right.

I'll post again with a few more shots.

Here are close-ups of spring location.

First is taken from rear, second from front. They're a bit fuzzy but hopefully you can see some detail.

Let me know if you need further explanation - I can see how the parts in your photos should fit.

Re: mercury 15hp

In the second photo on the second post, it's fuzzy, but perhaps you can see the location of the heavier spring (one with equal-length "tails").

In this position, the big arm (with screw in end) is pointing at about 12 o'clock (when looking at the block from the starboard side). There is a tab protruding from the hub of this arm at about 3 o'clock. This tab is about 1/2" wide.

The heavier spring is positioned with each tail on either side of this tab. The upper spring tail (above the tab) is closest to the engine block.

The other, smaller arm is pointing at about 10 o'clock. This smaller arm also has a tab and it, too, is positioned adjacent to the tab on the big arm - at about 3 o'clock. (So, the tabs overlap each other and spring tails are located on either side of these tabs)

As far as the other spring, I can't see it very well with the assembly in place. However, I can see that the big arm has a small, notched tab at about 10 o'clock. The longer of the 2 tails on the second spring fits under that notch. I can't see the spring's short tail location. Hopefully, you can figure that out. If not, post a photo of the other side of the big arm and we can figure out where the spring should go.

(all times noted above are in Greenwich Mean Time;))

Re: mercury 15hp

hi rick,i think ive sussed it,i was going wrong on the main spring(equal length tails)the 2 tails cross over each other to give the tension and the other spring sits over the top and underneath one of the larger springs tails(i think) will let you know when i run it up (mite be a few months)
thanks muchly for your input
Andy
