Hey guys

Buddy has a 1980 Mercury 50HP and the sticker is worn but seems like it only has a serial number. We need the model number to find the right diagram in cowley marine's site.

Is there another location like stamped on the head with model number or under the cowling area?

Thanks,
DamianJP

Re: Mercury 1980 Stamped model number?

I have the same issue with a 1979 20HP SN 5334882. Is there some place on the motor indicating a model number? I hope I can still get parts, but all the parts places I have looked at this serial number does not show up so I hope the model number will help.

Thanks,

Mercs use serial numbers NOT model numbers. You see any white paint on them?

There should be a serial number (7 digits) stamped into the top of the engine block. You may need to remove the cowling and bracketary to see it....

Hey aChris

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury_mercruiser_hp/MERCURY/1980/ 50.cfm

That site is asking for a model number.
His serial is 5534190

Told him to look up there, it should be stamped but mabey the bracket is in the way like you said, I'll tell him to dig around up there.

Thanks,
DamianJP

Here is another site that asks for model numbers.

www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc/Mercury/1979/parts.html

I was a Merc dealer in the 90s.... First time I've ever seen anyone use model numbers. All Merc literature is based on serial numbers...

With that serial number you can get anything you need from most places. I suspect Crowley and boat.net are used to dealing with white engines....

That serial number places it firmly in 1980 territory....

Achris I got this repair manual part number 90-75512 from another post. Do you know if it would work for a 20HP 1979 model (SN 5334882)?

So far I have not been able to find any parts sites that has any information for a motor with this serial number.

What information are you after? For parts, try www.mercruiserparts.com

Thanks for the manual number. I just want to be sure I can find the right diagrams and information for this motor. On all the sites I tried I have found no definite reference to the serial number of my motor this includes the site you have posted here. This is my first Mercury motor and it seems finding information is much more difficult than for Johnsons or Evinrudes.

Thanks for the help.

What information are you looking for?

Your engine is in all the parts listings. It's in the listing as "4709593 and Up"

I'll know more later today after I try to get it running. At the very least I am going to change the impeller also the tilt lock pin is missing but I can probably make something for that myself.

Just tried starting this motor and the only way it will run is with fuel sprayed into the spark plug holes. Tried spraying into the carb but that did not work. Disassembled the fuel filter assembly and was getting fuel to that point. Going to order a carb rebuild kit for starters. Not sure which one to get yet but am going to start looking online now.

Took carb off and found float gummy and stuck. Going to soak carb and rebuild it. Also removed lower unit to replace impeller assembly. iboats has everything I need for the impeller but doesn't have rebuild kit for the carburetor. Anyone have a favorite site to order carb kits from?

Re: Mercury 1980 Stamped model number?

I use www.mercruiserparts.com and there are a few kits available. If you just need the Carb gaskets use 1399-5198, if you need the fuel pump diaphrams get 1399-5137, but if you need all of it and needle and seat use 1399-51991.
