Mercury 2.5hp auxiliary - serial number help

Evening all,
a new member here with a basic question: can anyone tell if Mercury stamp serial numbers on these engines and if so where to find it?
As I say it's a 2.5 hp unit with a fixed drive [no gears] but other than a "family" number inside the top casing I can find no other numbers that might enable me to age it.
I don't know if the fact it's over here in the UK means it might be different tounits elsewhere?
Any thoughts anyone?
