I have a 2001 150hp Saltwater motor with carbs. The Water pump impeller has been replaced but the tell tale hole does not pee water at idle and it only sputters at speed. I checked the thermostats and one was closed and the other was partially opened. I removed both t-stats and the tell tale hole has a full stream but I plan to replace the t-stats and am thinking that the tell tale hole cannot be supplied by the T-stats or there would be no water visible until the engine warmed up. I know the impeller is working because water is flowing through the t-stat housings, but where else does the tell tale hole get water until the t-stats open? And am I in danger of hurting the motor if I run it without T-stats.

You should have thermostats to keep the temp up where it should be they are part of the entire system, just like the poppet valve. Replace the thermostats with ones w/vent holes. If you cannot find those, drill a 1/16-1/8 inch hole in the thermostats. Mine only spurts until the thermostats open up. The most important thing, that they open when warmed up.

I agree, I have the same engine and it only spurts until she warms up and then you get a steady stream. I've noticed that the water coming out of the "pisser" hole tends to be on the VERY hot side unlike some engines. I've had some trouble with the hole itself getting clogged with dust and tree sap. I use a wire fishing leader to run up the hole to make sure the line is open and not clogged.
