if its like the 64 merc 200. timing doesnt really happen like you think of in a larger engine. on the '64.. take off the flywheel with a puller, take the cover off the magneta, there will be two pieces of composite stuff riding on the main shaft and on those pieces are little flat springs with contacts. CLEAN THOSE CONTACTS. turn the engine over slowly to make sure that when one contact is touching the other is not and vice versa. make ajustments to their placement as need.<br />like i said that is for a '64,, but probablly the same for the later model
